The Alpha SubSonic 5 has recently replaced the SubSonic 1, which may still be available at some dealers. ![]() ![]() ![]() The SubSonic 1 comes with a variable crossover control (continuously variable from 50-150 Hz), a phase switch, and a volume control for matching the speaker to the rest of the system and to the crossover point you choose. It provides not only a choice between regular speaker connection or line inputs that allow direct preamp connection, but also special terminals that take the usual output signals of your power amplifier (or power amp section of a receiver or integrated amplifier), channel the lows to the sub and the rest of the spectrum to the two main speakers of your system. This does not relieve your amplifier of producing lows, but it does spare your main speakers from handling anything below 100 Hz. Some who value bass above all may want to use both a sub and the full bass output of their main speakers, but listeners who value musical transparency highly probably will prefer to let the SubSonic 1 do all the bass work. Despite its "Alpha" designation, you might want to audition the SubSonic 1 with the first three speakers (300i through 500i ) of our Century Series. It is a remarkable performer that's the least obtrusive high-performance subwoofer we know of on the market.
