Site Map

Hello from Pickering, Ontario, just east of Toronto. As one of the world's oldest makers of high-performance loudspeakers, we have developed this web site in the hope you will find it enjoyable and useful. There is quite a bit on the site that may not be apparent at first glance. So instead of a site map, we thought it might be helpful to provide (below) the full list of subjects we cover and a brief description of each one.

Our Philosophy
Performance and Value:
Our founder and chief designer, Paul Barton, sees the real challenge of speaker design as providing the highest possible performance for the lowest feasible cost. Here is how that influences the way our speakers are designed, and why they are exceptional values in all their price ranges.

Our Speakers

Our Calling Card
The New Alpha Series:
This inexpensive range of speakers, built around the one that critics have called "quite possibly the greatest loudspeaker bargain of the past 25 years," stands in many ways for everything we do in speaker design. It has recently been updated to provide even more striking value. The family includes the Alpha B, Alpha C, Alpha T, Alpha Intro LR, and Alpha Intro CLR — plus the Alpha SubZero and Alpha SubSonic 5 subwoofers.

The Image Series: This striking new series of high-performance speakers uses modular design and elegant systems-engineering to achieve a new high in performance per dollar. The series includes bookshelf-size models (the Image 1B, 2B, and 3LR), towers (the Image 4T, 5T, 6T, 7PT), center-channels (the Image 8C and 9C), the Image 10S bipolar surround speaker and the Image SubSonic 6 subwoofer.

The PSB Stratus Goldi: Our ultimate flagship. It is obviously not inexpensive, but serious audiophiles are calling it a steal. If you want to go all the way in performance, check this and the rest of our Stratus series.
The PSB Stratus Silveri: The latest iteration of a speaker that does not yield easily to any other, the Stratus Silveri has all the virtues of the original, plus some new elements that add up to an even more elegant and satisfying speaker.
The PSB Stratus Bronze: The Bronze is the least expensive full-range, floorstanding Stratus, and we think it is one of the major bargains in the audio/video world.
The PSB Stratus Mini: Selected as Stereophile's Budget Speaker of The Year, 1996, this small, unprepossessing, stand-mounted speaker has a passionate following. Read why and you will probably want to go hear why.
The Stratus Center-Channels: These specialized and definitely special speakers, the Stratus C5i and Stratus C6i, will make clearly audible sense of the most demanding movie soundtracks.

PSB SubSonic Subwoofers: From the Alpha SubZero through the Alpha SubSonic 5 and the Image SubSonic 6 to the Stratus SubSonic 7 , these speakers provide a whole new definition of "gut feeling" — and a sure foundation for all-out performance with music and Home Theater material.
And Some Theory Underlying Them: What Subs are really for, and why it matters.

Nine Recommended Home Theater Systems: All of our speakers match well timbrally for Home Theater use, but the nine systems we have singled out have special affinities.

Reviews, Listening Suggestions, and Dealer Locator:

Recent Awards and Recognitions: Here is a rundown of the recognition we've received in the past year or so, including the three speakers of ours that currently are on Stereophile's list of Recommended Components.

Good, Better, Best: The real differences between speakers at different performance levels, what it takes to achieve them, and what they mean for various listening situations in the real world.

Hear For Yourself: You will know how speakers sound when you get them home, but here are the ways to make sure that a showroom listening comparison of speakers is productive and at least somewhat predictive of what they will really sound like in your listening room.

Speaker Placement: Positioning speakers for optimum sound is almost as important as buying a great speaker in the first place.

Audio/Video Background:

Home Theater: Yes, that was — unfortunately — a Los Angeles bus careening through your neighbor's living room and crashing against the back wall. Here's what it is all about and how it can add to your life.

The Frequencies of Music: How a frequency response chart relates to the ranges of musical instruments.

Some Controlling Laws of Physics: Underneath the usual loudspeaker adjectives, some realities.

Paul Barton and Canada's NRC: Paul Barton has spent a good portion of the past 23 years at the National Research Council's unique audio facilities in Ottawa. Here is an overview of the NRC and what it has meant for Paul's design of our speakers.
