CustomSound Series
In-wall

Cross Sections of Custom Sound Speakers

With CustomSound, PSB’s goal was to honor
our very highest standards of sonic quality with speaker engineered to serve highperformance custom applications. These CustomSound models equal the performance of our flagship PSB Platinum Series, via two distinct families “in-wall,” and “in-cabinet” that serve flush-mounted “architecturalspeaker” and custom-cabinetry installations. The PSB CustomSound designs settle the long-standing conflict between sound and design. Finally, media-system designers enjoy the freedom to employ the types of speakers at every channel their designs demand, with full confidence of unsurpassed, PSB Platinumgrade performance.

CW800E - High Performance Enclosed In-Wall System
Decor (and sound) conscious owners want their sound systems to be as invisible as possible. PSB brings in–wall system performance to a new level with its CW800E 3-way system.

The CW800E takes components from the highly acclaimed Platinum T8 tower, adds a high performance in-wall cabinet and novel crossover circuitry to squeeze incredible performance out of a speaker less than 4” deep. A highly braced wooden full enclosure has a novel mounting scheme for easy in-wall installation. A highly optimized crossover network matches the balance of the system to other Platinum models and also shapes and extend bass response.

The driver complement includes dual 8” (200mm) high power shielded woofers with an incredibly stiff fiberglass cone. The woofers use very high mass and greater than normal motor strength to optimize them for best performance in the limited volume available. The same MTM (midrange-tweeter-midrange) components are used as in the T8. Dual 4 1/2” (115mm) midranges use a light and smooth responding fiberglass cone for a very pure midrange response. The midranges are positioned in a D’Appolito array around a high power, low resonance 1” (25mm) Titanium dome tweeter.

The crossover is quite complex with multiple second and third order sections and an elaborate combination of air core and laminated core chokes. Film capacitors are used
in all critical locations. A novel High-pass filter extends the in-cabinet bass response.

CW383 - 8” 3-Way In-Wall System
The CW383 is a sophisticated 3-way in-wall system. The system is constructed on a rigid precision molded panel. It features a turnable (90 degree steps) midrange tweeter array for best on and off axis response, no matter what the system orientation. Response is always best when the midrange and tweeter are vertically arrayed, but since the
system might be mounted with its long dimension horizontal or vertical, rotation of the midrange/tweeter baffle assures that optimum conditions are met. Furthermore, the tweeter can be pivoted in its mounting to aim it toward the listener. An 8” woofer gives the system high power handling and extended bandwidth. “Dog leg”
style mounting clips insure quick and easy mounting. Two response tailoring switches give adjustment to midrange level and tweeter level. The CW383 shares its mounting
frame and dimensions with the companion model CWS8 subwoofer. As such they create ideal partners for the ultimate in full range in-wall sound reproduction.

CWS8 - Dual 8” In-Wall Subwoofer
Creating deep and solid bass with an in-wall subwoofer poses special design challenges. PSB has met that challenge with the CWS8 dual 8” in-wall subwoofer. The domestic wall cavity is typically small and of an indefinite volume. Suitable subwoofer units need higher than average moving mass and BL (motor strength). They need to work in a range of volumes. The high mass and stiffer suspension aid that by diminishing the effect of wall cavity volume. Like all subwoofers, special attention to power handling issues is necessary. Besides high thermal capacity, achieved with specialized high temperature
voice coils, PSB pays special attention to excursion related effects. Woofers are designed to gracefully accept high excursion overload without making spurious noises.
Finally, the system response is carefully designed to be full and “weighty”, without being overblown or muddy.

CW180R / CW180S - Coaxial In-Wall Loudspeaker
Clever engineering and world class industrial design combine in the PSB CW180 coaxial in-wall loudspeakers. Special attention has been paid to the issue of aiming sonic energy toward the listener, no matter where they may be located. Available as both round and square versions (CW180R and CW180S), the PSB coax uses a unique high frequency, constant directivity SonicGuide™ that is gimbaled to angle in any direction. The SonicGuide™ is a
proprietary multipart flare attached to a 1” metal dome
tweeter. Its contours and dimensions are designed such
that it provides very even response with little variation
both on and off axis. It also increases the directivity of
the tweeter so that the listener hears a more focused sound field. Finally, it reduces energy that radiates backwards to bounce off of the woofer cone, in a stroke eliminating the response problems that plague all other coax speakers. The wave guide can be tilted 30 degrees left or right and the whole assembly turned through 90 degrees. Whether mounted on the wall or on the ceiling the system’s response can be directed toward the listener for best possible sound. The result is a very natural sound quality and great installation versatility.

PSB M Series
A New Standard of Sonic Performance, Setup Flexibility, and Installability.

Cross Sections of Custom Sound Speakers

As the quote from E-Town indicates, our new CustomSound architectural in-wall speakers seem destined to turn some heads. The CustomSound Series offers not just the level of sonic performance associated with our speakers but a wholly new level of setup flexibility and installability. Technical Specifications

When we surveyed the in-wall situation in our industry, it was clear to us that no model we knew of had really thought the in-wall situation through as thoroughly as we felt was necessary from both the listener's and the installer's points of view. We think we've achieved an unprecedented combination of three factors in the speakers we've developed:

Sonic Performance

Performance, of course, was a critical objective. And Paul Barton spent his usual long hours at the National Research Council in Ottawa, working out the details of four basic designs with repeating testing and listening sessions. For all four models, he chose 6-1/2-inch polypropylene woofers with rubber surrounds, and a 1-inch aluminum-dome tweeter with a neodymium magnet. The tweeter features a swivel mounting to allow it to be aimed to adjust to differing in-wall locations.. Three of the four models, including the top of the line, have the tweeter mounted coaxially, and Paul paid a great deal of attention to maximizing performance of this configuration. He also focused on building-in effective equalization measures (detailed below) to compensate for less-than- optimum positioning. And, as usual, he concentrated on making sure the four models were exact timbral matches, for mixing and matching in Home Theater applications. The three core PSB objectives of wide range (both frequency and dynamic), lifelike tonal balance, and crisp spatial imaging were at the center of things. You will find further details under the individual model descriptions.

Drivers, crossovers, and frames are all custom designed. with highest-quality, heavy-duty materials.

Setup Flexibility

In-wall speakers don't automatically sound their best, and simple adaptations of out-in-the-room designs are unlikely to deliver fully satisfying performance under varying conditions. So we took three steps to give our new speakers the kind of flexibility listeners (and the installers wanting to please them) need:

DOT All of the CustomSound models use a low-profile, compact, swivel-mounted tweeter to increase the ease and flexibility of locating speakers off-axis from the listener in different wall locations. You can't angle in-wall speaker installations up, down, or sideways, so giving the tweeter the swivel feature provides effective adjustment for the placements that your room (and home construction) indicate.

DOT Heavy-duty, front-mounted high and mid-frequency equalization switches allow you to tailor response, especially for working with an independent subwoofer. Again, in-wall installation can't compete with the placement flexibility -- and placement adjustment for room acoustics -- of freestanding speakers. So we compensate by providing a two-position equalization adjustment to tailor the balance of high and mid frequencies to your needs. It can be especially valuable for transitioning to a subwoofer or overcoming bassy sound from a location too near a room corner. The front position of the EQ switch makes it easy to use at any time after installation.

DOT All models have matching woofers and tweeters to assure timbral balance in different configurations. In-wall Home Theater requires direct radiation from surround speakers, rather than the dipole configuration that produces reflected sound from surrounds. With nothing to mask any timbral differences, it's very important to get timbral balance right. Which is why Paul Barton spent many hours at the NRC on the issue. You will appreciate the work.

DOT Common dimensions between models eases not only original installation but future additions and upgrades. This isn't an initial sonic consideration, but if you decide to make any changes in your in-wall configuration over time, this feature can help make sure that an upgrade is really an upgrade rather than a questionable change.

DOT Biamplification jumpers and terminals allow increased dynamic response and power handling.

Installability

Typical in-wall designs seem to expect the building world to be nicely rational and straightforward to deal with. It's not. Construction is full of irregularities, tight spaces, and mistake-correction. Its tolerances need understanding, and so do the differences between new construction, existing construction, and remodeling situations. Most of the speakers designed for in-wall use are not even complete. They often require different, additional bracketry and added expense to meet the requirements of new construction. We were determined to make installation of the CustomSound series as easy, flexible, and convenient as possible for contractors, dealers, and do-it-yourself installers alike — in any and all likely situations.

DOT When you look at the illustrations on the succeeding product pages, two of our innovations in the CustomSound series are easy to see. One is the SplitRing back frame on all models, which provides efficient and secure full-perimeter clamping in both new construction and remodels. The other, our SlideOn mounting bars, allow fast, accurate, and secure new construction installation.

DOT Two small niceties will be enormously appreciated by many installers, especially those doing it over and over in different situations day after day. One is the center hairlines on all four sides of the backframe on each model, which are a major aid to initial rough-in. The other is the elongated mounting holes, which make it easy to true things up in final installation. (In our initial demos of the CustomSound series, this little feature lit up the faces of many people who work in the trenches of construction and installation.)

DOT Integral wire clamps and 12AWG, gold-plated terminal posts ensure fast and secure rough-in and finish wiring.

DOT Low-root, black oxide stainless steel screws, into countersunk holes throughout, ease and speed fastening.

DOT All of the CustomSound models come complete with all features. There's no last-minute running out for the missing element.

We think you will find that the installation and use of the CustomSound series is a match in every way for the top-flight sonics cited by E-Town.
